The story of a dream

After emigrating to the Americas at just 15 years old from his hometown of As Pontes, A Coruña, José María Rivera Corral returned to Galicia with new savings and big ideas. Among them was one that was rather unusual for the time: opening a brewery and ice factory. José María named it “La Estrella de Galicia”, recalling his former business in Veracruz, “La Estrella de Oro”. That same year, Ramón y Cajal was awarded the Nobel Prize and Aguas de Cabreiroá was founded.

A Pioneering Initiative

The First World War forced us to keep breaking new ground in order to overcome the supply shortages caused by the conflict. This led us to establish Spain's first hop plantation in Betanzos, which soon became a national benchmark.

Estrella Galicia

Being a family of brewers is in our DNA. That's why the founder's son, one of Spain's first Master Brewers, became part of the company's second generation. His expertise enabled us to innovate and continually improve the way we brew our beer. We must have been doing something right because, little by little, more and more people began asking for our beer.

The Spanish Civil War and the Second World War brought economic hardship and shortages of raw materials, forcing our brewery to stop production for the first—and only—time in our history. It was a challenge that only strengthened our passion for what we do. In the years that followed, we modernised our equipment, making both our brewing and bottling processes more efficient.

We continued making history, reaching 10 million litres of beer produced. This milestone led the third generation of the Rivera family to make a defining decision: relocating the brewery. Remaining true to our roots, the new brewery stayed in A Coruña. It opened in 1972, while the original facilities were transformed into a brewery and beer hall that has since become one of the city's landmarks. It was during this period that Estrella Galicia Especial Rivera was introduced, and in 1979 we launched our first canned beer.

As society continued to evolve, so did we. In 1980, we launched our first alcohol-free beer, an innovative product that gradually earned its place in bars across Spain and became a permanent part of the beer selection.

After so many years, one thing had become clear: in this family, settling for "good enough" has never been an option. That's why, throughout the 1990s, we began our international expansion, taking a piece of our homeland wherever we went.

Our centenary

We celebrated 100 years of learning, determination and dedication to brewing the best beer possible every single day. This milestone inspired us to make a promise: to remain a 100% family-owned Galician company, committed to innovation while staying true to our own character.

Now present in more than 30 countries, we continue reaching further every day, both internationally and across Spain. This was also when we launched our first nationwide campaign: "At this point, I think we should get to know each other." And we never stopped doing things our own way. In 2012, we introduced the first bell-ringing celebrations where people toasted with beer, while also launching new products such as Estrella Galicia Light and seasonal brews like Estrella Galicia Xacobeo.

With 118 years of history behind us, we continue striving to brew the best beer possible. In 2021, we realised we could also improve what was on the outside. We introduced a new visual identity where everything mattered except appearances, redesigning our cans and labels to make them more sustainable. Then, in 2022, we launched NOpack, eliminating all cardboard from our six-pack packaging and taking another step towards creating a positive impact.

 

Our non-conformist spirit is reflected in everything we do: from partnerships with global platforms such as Netflix to our efforts to revive traditional local festivals and support every one of our bars.

 

A story that has only just begun.
